Periodically, Flexera releases a new version of the lmadmin license service that you install on your network license server machine. You can find the download link to the latest version along with other resources here: GoldSim Network License Downloads Page.
If you already have a working network license running on your server, follow the steps outlined in this article. Otherwise, you should refer to other instructions in our Network License Help Articles for help on installing on a new machine or transferring your network license to a different machine.
Prerequisites
- The latest version of GLSActUtil, which can be downloaded from our website, here.
- The License Server is already installed on the machine
- Java JRE (latest version)
Instructions
These steps are intended for the most likely, default scenario but we recommend that you refer to the documentation found on our Downloads Page for more specific instructions.
- Plan for a license service outage of approximately 1 hour and communicate with end users.
- On the server machine with an active network license, open the Windows Services manager (services.msc) and find the lmadmin service. The default name is "lmadmin64".
- Right-click and stop the service
- In Windows File Explorer, locate and run the FNPLS uninstaller program. Typically, this is found under C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher License Server Manager
- Right-click on the uninstaller application and choose "Run as Administrator"
- As you step through the process, you will be prompted to choose whether to uninstall the old version of lmadmin. If GoldSim is the only product using lmadmin, then check Yes.
- After uninstallation is complete, the old Windows service no longer appears in the list of Windows services and that the old data folder (“C:\ProgramData\FLEXlm”) has been completely removed. The old installation folder (“C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher License Server Manager”) still exists, because it contains the old GTG folder (with the old vendor daemon files). You can go ahead and manually delete the old installation folder.
- Download the latest version of the Flexnet Publisher License Server (FNPLS), or "lmadmin", installer from this page.
- Install lmadmin as administrator (right-click the installer "lmadmin-x64_n6-xx_xx_x_x.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator").
- Step through the FNPLS installation steps and accept defaults with the exceptions listed below:
- In the step "Import files from Previous...", do *not* choose "import files"
- During installation, on the "lmreporter tool" page, do NOT check the box for "Install lmreporter tool" because this tool is not configured to be used for GoldSim licenses.
- On the step "Important Information", Check box for "install Visual C++ Redistributable Package" (the version shown in the screen capture below may not be up to date)
- Soon after this step you will be asked if you want to modify or repair. Choose "Repair" in then click "Finish"
- Accept the default HTTP Port Number value 8090.
- Enter a 5-digit port number in the License Server Port Number field. For security purposes, best practice is not to use a default port number. Instead, define a fixed port number that is outside of the 27000 and 27009 range. Click "Next".
- In step "Service Configuration", check box for "Run as a service" (IMPORTANT)
- Installation of the FNPLS should be complete.
-
IMPORTANT STEP! Copy the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\GTG\GoldSim License Server Activation Utility\GTG to the clipboard
- Paste the folder to this location: C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher 64-bit License Server Manager
- Start the lmadmin service (open Windows Services and right-click lmadmin64 and select 'Start')
- Open a browser window and type "localhost:8090" in the address bar. You should now see the license server web GUI
- Login to the Administration side (Administration tab in top right corner)
- For the first time, the username and password are both "admin".
- Check the Release Version at the top of the System Administration page to ensure it matches the version on our Network License Installer Downloads Page
- Click on the "Vendor Daemon Configuration" tab
- Click the "Import License" button then "Choose File"
- Browse to and select GTG.lic, located in C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher 64-bit License Server Manager\GTG and click Open.
- Check the box to Overwrite License File on License Server and click "Import License"
- If the file imports successfully, you should see the following message:
- Click OK.
- The Daemon will now appear in the list with its status set to "Up".
- Click on the line item (or click on "Administer") and you will see the Daemon configuration page (Note: the version number shown here - 11.16 - refers to the FNP Toolkit. The toolkit should not be confused with the FNPLS, which has a different version number.)
- Stop the vendor daemon
- Click on the line item again.
- Scroll down to the Vendor Daemon Port. Select the option to "Use this Port" then type in a 5-digit port number (typically a number between 50000 and 60000). You must specify a specific port number if you are communicating across an Internet firewall. If you select Default port, a random number will be generated each time you start the vendor daemon.
- Click "Save". You should see the following message:
- Select the "Vendor Daemon Configuration" tab, select the GTG line item, and click "Start". Navigate to another tab on the left-hand side and back to the "Vendor Daemon Configuration" tab to make sure it updates. You should now see that the status is "Up" in the Vendor Daemons row and your specified port number.
- Test a GoldSim client on the server machine and make sure you can connect to the license using the port number @ computer name (for example, 52188@isq-l-jasonx220).
- Test a GoldSim client on a different machine that is connected to the server.
Note about Java:
Java is needed to install the lmadmin service. Download the installer from here: Semeru Runtime Downloads - IBM Developer
Another option is the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (license required for commercial use): Java Archive Downloads - Java SE, which requires a license for commercial use.
