This model is intended as an educational tool for the general public interested in the Safety Assessment/Performance Assessment (SA/PA) modeling of the long-term human health risk from radioactive waste disposal sites. Its focus is intentionally limited to near-surface burial of low-level radioactive waste (LLW). Such modeling supports Safety Assessments required by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as discussed in https://www.iaea.org/publications/10884/safety-assessment-for-facilities-and-activities, as well as radiological Performance Assessments (PAs) required in the United States by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/performance-assessment.html and the Department of Energy (DOE) in https://www.directives.doe.gov/terms_definitions/performance-assessment. This Demonstration Model captures those most essential components shared by many near-surface LLW disposal facilities, existing and proposed. The site depicted in this model is entirely fictitious, and any resemblance to actual radioactive waste disposal sites is unintentional.
