For GoldSim 12 and later:
If you want to associate GoldSim files with GoldSim 12, follow these steps:
- Start up GoldSim 12
- Go to Model, Options, General tab
- Click the "Associate" button
For GoldSim 11.1 and earlier:
Sometimes it is convenient to double-click on a GoldSim model file from within Windows File Explorer instead of first starting the software program and then opening the model file from within GoldSim. If you have multiple versions of GoldSim installed already, there is a chance the default program that starts when double-clicking on the file is not the one you typically want to use. If this is the case, you will want to change the default program to the version of choice. To do this, follow the steps below (requires administrative privileges).
- Go to the installed path of the GoldSim version you want to become default (i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\GTG\GoldSim 11.1)
- Right-click on the GoldSim.exe file and select “Run as Administrator”
- After GoldSim opens, just close it.
Now that same version should open whenever you double-click on a GoldSim file. If the steps above do not change your default version of GoldSim, you may need to open your Registry Editor and delete a key value. The key value was likely generated by GoldSim during an installation process.
WARNING: The following solution involves making a minor change to the Windows Registry. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For general information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values Help topic in Registry Editor (regedit.exe). See also the following article from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/136393 or contact your local IT administrator for assistance. Included in the article are instructions for making a backup of the Windows Registry if you are concerned about making changes to it.
Open the Registry Editor (you will need to search for the executable regedit.exe) and then navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Classes -> GoldSim.Document -> shell -> open -> command. After navigating to this location, see if there is a key value called 'command' as indicated by the red rectangle in the screenshot below. If so, right-click the key value (in the right-hand window of the Registry Editor) and select 'Delete'. Confirm that you want to delete the key value.
After deleting the 'command' key, as described above, double-click a GoldSim (.gsm) file and see if it now opens in your default program of choice (i.e. the one you used when carrying out the three steps listed above). If it still does not open in the desired default program, then repeat the three steps listed above to change your default GoldSim version.
