For many engineered systems, it is necessary to predict measures such as reliability and availability. Reliability is the probability that a component or system will perform its required function over a specified time period. Availability is the probability that a component or system is performing its required function at any given time. GoldSim is used to model reliability and availability of a pump station using the Reliability Module. In this model, we will consider the reliability of the entire system of components, each having their own failure and repair mechanisms.
This model simulates the process of a pump station that operates based on water levels measured at a nearby water tank. As the water level draws down, the pump station automatically reacts by turning on and pumping water into the tank. When the water level in the tank rises above a target level, the pump is automatically shut off. The Reliability Module is used to simulate hypothetical failure modes for each component of the system. The components include:
- Power Supply
- Pressure Transducer (measures water level in the tank)
- Controller (interprets water level readings and triggers the motor switch)
- Motor (powers the pump)
- Pump (includes housing, impeller, shaft, seal, hub, and bearing assembly)
- Pipeline (includes pipes, shutoff valve, and surge control system)
- Tank
