February - Modeling Unsaturated Flow with Material Delays

This Webinar provides an introduction to modeling flow in GoldSim by using travel time to substitute for distance. A Material Delay element provides a convenient implementation of this approach which essentially involves assuming that a packet, or particle, of water goes in one end of a stream tube, or pipe, and after a set amount of time comes out the other end of the stream tube. The travel time through the stream tube is calculated by taking the travel distance along the stream tube and dividing it by the average velocity of the packet.

In GoldSim, a Material Delay element can be used to provide a simplified representation of flow which takes advantage of GoldSim's inherent knowledge of simulation time and minimizes the need for a detailed representation of space (which would be necessary for a grid-based, flow simulation tool). During the webinar, a simple simulation of vertical flow through the unsaturated zone will be developed. This simple scenario will then be expanded to represent outflow over time based on an irrigation pattern.
